Completed Capable Group project
Toronto Basement Home Cinema and Bar
The screen sets the direction in this Toronto basement. Recliners face one end of the room, the bar sits behind them, and dark walls and a dark ceiling give the cinema area a distinct identity. This completed Capable project shows what happens when one activity leads the layout.

Start with where people will sit
The wide screen is the focal point, with the main seats facing it directly. The photographs show seating at different distances from the screen, rather than a sofa pushed against every available wall. There is also space around the seating to reach the other parts of the room.
If a home cinema is your main reason for finishing a basement, lay out the screen and chairs before committing to the bar, storage or decorative finishes. Recliners need space in their open position. A path that looks clear when every chair is upright may disappear when people settle in.

Dark finishes give the cinema its own atmosphere
Charcoal walls and a dark ceiling surround the screen and seating. Recessed ceiling lights and wall lights are visible, while wood-look flooring runs through the room. The result feels intentionally different from a bright upstairs family room.
For your own cinema, plan lighting around both watching and moving through the space. Sound isolation depends on wall, ceiling and door construction you cannot see in a finished room. If keeping movie sound away from the rest of the house matters to you, specify it as its own requirement from the start.

A place to gather behind the seats
The bar counter and stools create a second place to sit behind the cinema seating. An arcade cabinet adds another activity nearby. This arrangement lets the basement offer more than one kind of evening without placing the social area between the audience and the screen.
The practical lesson is to draw the whole room in use: chairs reclined, stools occupied and people walking past. Decide which activities can share space and which need separation. Equipment, furniture and joinery should follow that plan, rather than leaving circulation to whatever floor area remains.

Separate the basement build from the cinema equipment
From about $40 per sq ft CAD
The current 2026 GTA planning baseline for a basic open basement is about $40 per square foot before HST, roughly $40,000 for 1,000 square feet. This is not a budget for recreating the cinema shown or a Capable quote. Price the projector, screen, audio system, seating, bar, custom cabinetry and any sound-isolation work separately.
