How to Plan & Prepare for a Kitchen Remodel

Taking on a major renovation project can feel overwhelming. But knowing what to expect and how to adequately plan for a kitchen renovation goes a long way in eliminating surprises and helping you be as prepared as possible before the project begins. Some things to keep in mind are:

  • Determine why you want to renovate your kitchen and set clear goals.
  • Do your home work: research web or kitchen remodel magazines to determine your desired kitchen style and finish (It makes the overall process a lot smoother, and this way we are able to get a sense of your desired style right away. Don’t worry, 🙂 this is the only work you will have to do for the rest of the process)
  • Create a prioritized list of the things you would like for your new kitchen and distinguish between your wants and your needs.
  • Be thorough when searching for the right contractor
  • Have a contingency plan on how your family will live without access to the kitchen

Kitchen Designs Types

One-wall

This type of kitchen design was originally known as the Pullman kitchen and often found in studio or loft apartments. It is a great option for saving space since it utilizes a single wall to mount cabinets and store appliances. Many modern designs incorporate an island in addition to the wall.

Galley

This is another good option if you have limited kitchen space. Also known as a walk-through kitchen, this type of kitchen design has two walls that run parallel to each other with countertops on both – allowing you to walk between them. This offers simplicity when it comes to kitchen renovations since there are no corners or tight spaces to worry about.

L-Shape

This design is ideal for small to medium sized kitchens. It consists of two perpendicular countertops that create an L shape. This offers a lot of versatility when it comes to customizing your kitchen.

Horseshoe

This is also referred to as a U-shape kitchen. This layout consists of three walls of cabinets and countertop space, although modern versions of this design have an L-shaped kitchen with an island, which makes up the third “wall.”

Island

This feature offers additional space for cabinets, meal prep and eating area. It is both stylish and functional. The possibilities are limitless.

Peninsula

This is when the island is connected to an L-shaped kitchen, transforming it into a horseshoe or a G-shaped kitchen. This is a good option if you want an island but do not have a large enough kitchen space to have a standalone island.
