Completed Capable Group project
Brampton Kitchen Renovation: An Open Centre
An island is not the only way to bring people into a kitchen. In this completed Brampton project, the cabinetry follows the walls and the centre stays open, with casual seating beside the windows. Cooking, storage and a place to sit share the room without a fixed block in the middle.

The open space is part of the layout
The wide view shows where this kitchen makes room for sitting: two bright chairs and a small glass table occupy the centre, while the sink, cooktop and main counters sit along the walls. The seating can move; an island would give that part of the floor a fixed purpose.
There is a trade-off. Without an island, the perimeter cabinets and counters have to provide the storage and preparation space you need. Before borrowing this layout, check where you will unpack groceries, prepare food and put dishes away. If those tasks fit comfortably along the walls, leaving the centre open becomes a practical choice.

The cooking wall carries the warmest finish
Pale blue-grey cabinet fronts sit below a wall of warm rectangular tile. The cooktop and stainless hood are between two windows, while the tile continues around the openings. The different colours give the cooking area definition without adding another piece of furniture.
At the adjoining wall, stacked built-in appliances sit next to the refrigerator. Keeping those tall elements together leaves the cooktop wall lower and more open. If you are borrowing this idea, start with the actual appliance dimensions: the cabinet openings, door swings and usable counter space need to work together.

Test an island on your own floor first
This project is a useful reference when you like a spacious kitchen but do not want every open area filled with cabinetry. Before choosing an island, mark its proposed footprint on your own floor. Open the nearby appliance doors and walk the routes you use most. Then compare that arrangement with a perimeter kitchen and movable seating.
The right answer depends on how much preparation space and storage you need. This kitchen shows one finished way to do it without an island.
