The Short Planning Sequence
Before cabinets are ordered, resolve these decisions in order:
- Select the exact range and hood, or narrow the choice to compatible models.
- Decide whether the system will be exterior-ducted or recirculating.
- Review manufacturer clearances, duct connection and electrical requirements.
- Trace a realistic route to an exterior termination where ducting is proposed.

Ducted and Recirculating Hoods Are Different Systems
Both types can have a place, but they do different jobs. A recirculating hood should not be described as doing “nothing.”

Health Canada’s ventilation guidance describes vented kitchen range hoods as source exhaust and notes that non-vented fans return odours and moisture to the kitchen. A recirculating product may be an available configuration, but it does not exhaust air or moisture outdoors. Verify whether that configuration is suitable and permitted for the project.
Hood Coverage Matters as Much as the Number on the Box
A hood can move air without drawing much of the rising cooking air into the hood. This capture performance starts with its width, depth, height, shape and position relative to the cooking surface.
A four-hood laboratory study on residential exhaust-hood capture efficiency found that particle capture varied by hood, airflow and cooking condition. A separate U.S. study of 15 installed cooking-exhaust devices found substantially higher capture for back burners than front burners for almost all devices. Health Canada also advises using back burners when practical.
That evidence supports practical questions:
- Does the hood physically cover the active cooking area?
- Is its front edge positioned to capture cooking from the front burners?
- Does the installation height follow the hood and range manufacturers’ instructions?
- Will a cabinet surround or adjacent detail restrict the opening, discharge or cleaning?
The Duct Route Can Change the Cabinet Plan
An exterior-ducted hood needs a continuous path to a suitable exterior termination. The route may cross a cabinet, bulkhead, wall, ceiling or roof assembly and encounter framing, plumbing, wiring or HVAC components.
If the route depends on removing, widening or rebuilding a wall, coordinate it with the kitchen wall-opening checks before demolition or cabinet production.
Before approving the cabinet elevation, confirm:
- the hood outlet location and orientation;
- the duct size and material specified by the manufacturer;
- adapters, bends and transitions;
- conflicts with concealed services and building components;
- the route through cabinetry and access for service;
- the intended exterior termination location;
- who is responsible for openings, flashing, sealing, insulation and interior repairs.
Follow the manufacturer’s permitted duct size, length, fittings and transitions. Do not improvise a smaller duct to fit the cabinet; let the product requirements and actual route inform the millwork.
Noise Is a Performance Issue When Nobody Uses the Hood
A high setting has little value if the household avoids it because it is too loud. Noise can come from the fan, moving air, duct restrictions, loose components or termination.
Planning for use means asking:
- Which settings will be practical for everyday cooking?
- Can the hood be operated as the manufacturer recommends?
- Is the route direct, and will the system follow its specifications?
- Can filters and grease surfaces be reached for cleaning?
Before ordering, compare the published sound ratings at normal cooking settings, hear the model if possible, and confirm that filters can be removed without dismantling the cabinet enclosure. Installed noise will still depend on the duct route.
Choose a system the household will use consistently and can maintain.
Cabinet Integration Needs More Than a Centreline
Cabinet drawings should identify the exact hood or insert, not merely “range hood.” Systems differ in enclosure dimensions, access, clearances, liners, discharge locations and mounting.
Review the drawings for:
- the final range and hood model numbers;
- cooking-surface and hood centrelines;
- hood size, installation height and required clearances;
- enclosure and liner dimensions for an insert;
- duct, electrical connection and service access;
- adjacent doors, shelves, panels, trim and backsplash;
- a practical path to remove and replace filters.

Exterior Openings and House Pressure Need Project-Specific Review
Creating an exterior opening can affect cladding, air and water sealing, insulation, fire separations, structure and termination location.

Powerful exhaust can also depressurize a house, meaning the hood pulls out more air than enters naturally. Health Canada’s ventilation guidance explains that exhaust equipment can affect pressure and that higher-flow systems may need makeup-air consideration. Makeup air is replacement air introduced to balance exhaust; the question is especially relevant in tighter homes or where combustion equipment is present.
That does not mean every kitchen needs makeup air. The answer depends on the equipment, house, other exhaust devices, fuel-burning appliances and current requirements. Use project-specific HVAC and code review.
