Quick answer
Switching from a gas range to induction can affect the electrical scope, circuit route, cabinet opening, countertop, ventilation and sequence of work. Select an exact model, have a Licensed Electrical Contractor (LEC) assess the existing conditions, coordinate the gas disconnect with a qualified fuels contractor, and freeze the relevant dimensions before cabinets and counters are ordered.
That does not mean every home needs a panel upgrade or that an existing circuit is automatically suitable. The answer is project-specific.

Separating these lines shows whether a lower starting number represents the same conversion scope.
1. Choose the exact appliance, not just “an induction range”
Similar-looking ranges can have different connection details, dimensions, clearances and installation methods. Start with a model number and current instructions.
Record:
- the complete model number;
- dimensions and required clearances;
- the required electrical supply, connection method and location;
- anti-tip and mounting requirements;
- countertop or cut-out instructions;
- ventilation guidance.
Keep the manual with the renovation documents so the cabinet designer, countertop fabricator and LEC use the same specifications.
2. Have a Licensed Electrical Contractor assess the existing conditions
A panel photo helps an early conversation, but it is not an electrical approval. The LEC may need to consider the appliance, service, panel, existing wiring, other planned loads and route to the kitchen.
In an older Toronto house, coordinate that electrical assessment with the broader pre-demolition kitchen checks instead of treating the range as the only unknown.
Ontario’s Electrical Safety Authority says almost all new or changed electrical work requires an ESA notification. Hired electrical work must be done by an LEC. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code regulation is the legal framework, but isolated code excerpts are not a project design.
Only the project assessment can establish whether new wiring or a panel or service change is required.
3. Check the circuit route before the kitchen is closed up
The team needs a workable path from the electrical source to the range. It may cross finished ceilings, framing, bulkheads, cabinets, plumbing or concealed services.
Coordinate it while the renovation is open. ESA says electrical installations must be reviewed at the applicable stage before concealment. Premature drywall or cabinet installation can create rework.
4. Confirm the cabinet opening and countertop details
Do not let the cabinet order rely on a generic size placeholder. Check the exact instructions before millwork production.
Look at:
- the finished opening between base cabinets;
- depth relative to doors, pulls and traffic;
- connection location;
- door and drawer conflicts near corners;
- countertop or cut-out details and required clearances;
- anti-tip access and future service access.
Test the range in the whole kitchen layout. Open the oven door on the plan and check the path to the sink, landing space and passing room.
5. Plan the gas disconnection as regulated work
The gas line is not an ordinary demolition item. Ontario’s Gaseous Fuels Regulation prohibits removing a gas appliance or altering gas equipment unless the person holds the certificate required for that work.
Assign the disconnection and related piping work to a TSSA-registered fuels contractor using an appropriately certified technician. Name the responsible party and any documentation to be provided in the scope.
“Remove old range” is too vague if responsibility for the gas disconnect, appliance removal and final installation is unclear.
6. Keep ventilation in the plan
Induction removes combustion at the cooktop, but not cooking pollutants. Health Canada says cooking on gas or electric appliances creates particulate matter. Cooking can add moisture; gas can add combustion by-products.
Ask which hood, coverage and duct route fit the appliance, cooking pattern and house.
Plan the hood before upper cabinets. Its body, clearances, duct direction, exterior route and enclosure can affect cabinetry. Do not treat a study-specific airflow result as a universal sizing rule. 7. Test the cookware and controls before committing
Check the selected model’s manual for compatible cookware; suitability can vary by material, pan size, flatness and construction.
Usability matters as much as compatibility. Try the controls in person when possible:
- Can you read and operate them in normal kitchen light?
- How do they respond to wet fingers or spills?
- Can you adjust heat quickly while handling a pan?
- Are the most-used elements positioned where you expect?
- Does the appliance have controls or lock features that suit the household?
8. Freeze the sequence and keep the records
Organize the work in four phases:
- Appliance selection: shortlist the exact model and collect its installation instructions.
- Service assessment: have the LEC assess the electrical conditions and confirm the responsible qualified fuels contractor.
- Design coordination: resolve the circuit route, gas disconnection, ventilation, cabinets and countertop dimensions.
- Installation and records: complete applicable rough-in review before concealment, finish the installation and keep the final records.
Appliance specifications must reach the trades before rough-in, and rough-in information must reach cabinet and countertop teams before fabrication. ESA advises homeowners to keep the Certificate of Acceptance after notified electrical work passes the applicable review, along with manuals, invoices and any documentation provided by the fuels contractor.
